About those lessons learned…
I’m sitting on the balcony in blazing sunshine. It’s 6.15pm and after a few chilly days it’s lovely to be too hot in the sun again.
It’s been another busy few days, filled with hiking, eating, a return visit from our Les Houches friends and the occasional glass of wine. I’ve even had time to squeeze in some work.
Following the departure of La Sauterelle a couple of weeks ago, we have a new friend – Le Chat Noir et Blanc.
His life’s work appears to be attempting to break into our chalet and persuading the kids to feed him ham. Also, smoked salmon. Ffs. He met his match when Powell the dog came to visit and chased him up the road at warp speed. It took a great deal of high end charcuterie to soothe his karma after that.
And so to those lessons learned. You would think, would you not, that after the Génépi experience, we would balk at the very idea of a luminous green drink that both looks and smells like listerine? Well, you’d be wrong. Very, very wrong. Last night, we headed out to Les Copeaux for a raclette. So far, so civilised. It was tremendous. Not quite as tremendous as La Fruitière des Perrières, but the restaurant there has now closed, along with half the village, until the ski season starts. Notwithstanding the artery furring amount of cheese we’d consumed, we moved onto dessert, which is where it started to go a bit pear shaped. One of them was served with a straw – all the better to slurp the innocuous sounding Get 27 that was poured over the ice cream.
This stuff was first produced in the 1970’s and has remained firmly there ever since. It’s extraordinary. I’m not entirely sure I even have the words to describe it, except to say, Just Don’t. No really. Don’t. There’s a grownup version called Get 31, which has been stripped out of anything hallucinogenic. We know this, because we tried them both. And then had another Gets 27 to make sure.
I had some very odd dreams.
The all change bell is about to ring in our chalet again. The kids flew home a couple of days ago and our last guest leaves in the morning. It’s been an action packed, wonderful couple of weeks with friends and family which is, as the best things always are, over too soon. My thoughts are slowly turning towards home – Nick and I have another week left and an awful lot to pack into it.
